During the briar shortage, many pipe makers began using cured gnome hearts. I made some myself. But what to do with all that leftover gnome? Well, I think bits of the spine make nice tampers. This is the smallest of 3 that are available. At a length of just over 2 inches, this compact tamper sports a brass adornment at the top, followed by a piece of gnome vertebra, then a copper shaft which ends in a .22 casing. The weird thing about gnome bones is that when you cut into them, black bile comes out, which you can see in each of these tampers. I thought I’d leave it in tact for those curious of the nature of fantastical anatomy.
